Electronic Travel Authorisation Expands

March 7, 2025

Electronic Travel Authorisation (ETA) is now open for European citizens

As of March 5, 2025, European travellers can now apply for an ETA for travel on or after April 2, 2025.

What is the UK Electronic Travel Authorisation?

The UK ETA is a digital travel authorisation required for most foreign visitors entering the United Kingdom.  Similar to the U.S. ESTA (Electronic System for Travel Authorization), the ETA aims to bolster border security while streamlining the travel experience for international visitors.

Important note: The ETA is not a visa and does not replace the visa requirement for those who need one. Instead, it is an additional step for travellers who do not require a visa for short-term stays, such as tourists, business travellers, or those transiting through the UK.

Who is Affected by the UK Electronic Travel Authorisation?

The UK has gradually implemented the ETA program in stages. Initially launched in 2023 for travellers from certain Middle Eastern countries, including Saudi Arabia, the UAE, and Jordan, the program has expanded significantly in 2025.

  • January 8, 2025: Travellers from non-European countries, including the U.S., Canada, and Australia, are required to obtain an ETA prior to traveling to the UK.
  • April 2, 2025: European citizens will also need an ETA, making this a global requirement for all visa-exempt travellers. The application process has begun today, March 5, 2025.

How to Apply for an ETA

The application can be completed through the UK government’s official website or the ETA app.

Applicants must submit their ETA online before travelling. The process involves providing personal details such as contact information and passport numbers, answering a few questions, and uploading a recent passport-style photo. Processing may take up to three business days, so it’s important to apply well in advance of your trip.

A UK ETA costs £10 and is valid for multiple entries for six months over a two-year period.

What if an ETA is refused?

If an ETA application is refused, there is no right to appeal. However, individuals who are rejected may apply for a visit visa.

An ETA may be refused for several reasons, including criminal activity, prior violations of immigration laws, providing false information, having a previous visitor visa application refused (without subsequent approval), or having an ETA canceled without the approval of a new visa application

If the ETA is refused, the applicant will need to apply for a visa. In most cases, this will involve applying for a visitor visa. For some applicants, securing the visa may resolve the issue, allowing them to travel to the UK with the visa. Once they have the visa, an ETA will no longer be required.
