Transit Visitor Visa
What is a Transit Visitor Visa and who needs one?
There are two types of Transit Visitor Visa; a Direct Airside Transit Visa, and a Visitor in Transit Visa, explained below. These visas are for visa nationals who want to transit the UK on route to another country outside the Common Travel Area, and who will enter the UK for up to 48 hours by crossing the UK border unless an exception applies. The exceptions are contained with Appendix Visitor: Transit Without Visa Scheme.
Direct Airside Transit Visa
This visa is specifically for visa nationals who are changing flights in the UK on their way to another country, and will not be passing through border control. It is essential to provide documentation confirming your permission to enter the country you plan to travel to from the UK when applying for this visa.
If you do not know whether you will pass though immigration control, you will need to confirm this with the airline you are flying with.
Visitor in Transit Visa
This visa is specifically designed for visa nationals who are changing flights in the UK on their way to another country, but will pass through border control. It is crucial to note that this visa only allows a maximum stay of 48 hours in the UK. Furthermore, it is mandatory to provide evidence demonstrating your permission to enter the country you intend to travel to after departing from the UK.
