Windrush Scheme
The implementation of the Windrush Scheme aims to facilitate individuals who arrived and established their lives in the UK before 1st January 1973 from Commonwealth nations, commonly referred to as the ‘Windrush generation,’ along with their offspring, to acquire proof of their Immigration or settled status, or to seek British citizenship without any costs involved.
These individuals are UK residents, either currently or in the past, who didn’t require an official permission to stay due to the laws in place at the time they arrived. Consequently, they may not have obtained any documentation to prove their status.
In June 1948, the MV Empire Windrush docked at Tilbury Docks in Essex, UK. This ship, commonly known as ‘Windrush,’ carried individuals from Jamaica, Trinidad and Tobago, along with other islands as a way to address the labor deficiencies in the UK following World War II.
The group known as the Windrush generation, who established themselves in the United Kingdom on the first day of January in 1973, were provided with unlimited permission to stay due to the enactment of the Immigration Act of 1971. Consequently, they possessed a lawful status to reside within the UK, albeit without any official documentation certifying their authorization to either enter or continue their stay.
The ‘Windrush Scheme’ offers potential eligibility for individuals who have been residing or establishing themselves in the UK for a significant period without possessing any official records attesting their immigration status.
If you fulfill any of the following requirements, you have the possibility to request a document that verifies your qualification for residing and working in the United Kingdom.
- If you arrived in the UK prior to 31st December 1988 from any country and have since established your residency here,
- In the event that you migrated to the UK from a Commonwealth nation prior to 1973,
- In case your parents migrated to the UK from a Commonwealth nation prior to 1973,
You may apply for citizenship without any cost if you are a Commonwealth citizen and have settled in the UK prior to 1 January 1973, or if you are the offspring of such an individual.
Furthermore, the subsequent individuals are likewise encompassed:
- Individuals who possess a connection to a specific country or territory are regarded as citizens of the United Kingdom and colonies.
- On 1 January 1973, those classified as British subjects, lacking citizenship as per the prevailing legal framework.
There are no fees associated with applying, and individuals have the freedom to submit their applications whether they are located within the UK or outside of it.
